No fewer than 13 passengers perish and 98 wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” declared the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its role in public projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, beating forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party demanded an prompt suspension in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and management of these vital undertakings.
